Our Big Ocean Family Grows!
We are excited to announce the latest expansion of our network with the addition of two member sites: Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park and Christmas Island Marine Park. These marine sanctuaries signify a shared commitment to conserving marine biodiversity and protecting our oceans for generations to come.
Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, encompasses 27 coral islands with a diverse and abundant marine ecosystem. It is home to vibrant coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and unique marine life. The park protects 467,054 square kilometers, home to vital migratory birds and multiple endemic fish species.
Located in the eastern Indian Ocean, Christmas Island Marine Park is renowned for its annual red crab migration. Its unique reefs shelter an astonishing variety of marine life, including dolphins, whale sharks, and coral spawning events. Covering an area of 277,016 square kilometers, the park’s offshore waters are a green zone where extractive activities like fishing and mining are not allowed.
